Re: Uni Applications down for 2012!

The reports are all a bit misleading though. Applications for Oxbridge and medicine/vet/dentistry are down by 0.8 %. The actual number of 18 years olds in the uk is down by 2% (so really 0.8% cannot be described as down). Also, I think applications from 17/18 year olds have actually risen for these universities and subjects by 1.1%, so if these figures are correct, any diminution in numbers is probably due to mature students or EU and International ones deciding not to apply. At any rate, there seems to be no reduction in demand or in competition for attractive courses at well known institutions - rather a rise, if these early figures are to be believed.

Interestingly, applications are significantly down from Wales (about 8% I think) and Scotland - not as much as in England, but Scotland is still free for the Scots and Welsh students' fee structure remains the same next year as this, no matter where they apply in the UK, which suggests that factors other than concerns about fee increases are involved.

Applications are still open for everywhere else but after the bad press certain degrees have received this year, it is no wonder if there are large drops in certain subjects at some institutions.
