Commuting to medical school?

I'm a long way off dealing with UCAS, etc, as we're not even into GCSE's yet, so apologies if this is a silly question but I'm thinking from the view of financial planning:
Is it feasible to commute to medical school or does this type of degree require you either to 'live in' or live very close? I'm assuming you have ward training with shifts perhaps(?), etc.
We live approximately an hour away by train and there are so many medical schools in London which could be aimed for, depending on your responses.
Thanks
