Migrating Graduates

Read a recent report on the web that our top University graduates, science and medicine in particular, are immigrating to Aus and the US as jobs are hard to come by in the uk, and generally fed up. Should we be worried?, the report states and concludes that the numbers by 2020 will 20% of the top graduates leaving the UK.

I would certainly be concerned at the moment although things may well change by the time our children get to university. The NHS is so strapped for cash that hospital trusts are freezing posts when staff leave and often posts disappear into the ether. Junior doctors are having problems getting jobs in the first place and I know of both registrars and consultants losing jobs. I don't know about other jobs traditionally taken by high flyers such as law or engineering. Maybe we need to push our children into a trade rather than grammar. After all builders have never had it so good!!!!!!

Industry in the UK is crying out for good science/ technology / engineering graduates so please encourage your bright children to go into these fields and not to give the world any more lawyers!

My OH works in a role which involves meeting a lot of top people in industry and universities and has very strong views on the importance of science and engineering! Also see these news items...

and there has been a Government scheme to attract overseas science graduates which indicates that a lot of migration happens in the opposite direction to that suggested by the original poster....

MInd you, the UK might have to work a bit harder to counteract the attractions of life in Australia.....!
