I've read recently that home applications for universities are down (no surprise there with the current fees!) and international applicant numbers are up from previous years.

How does this affect our children's chances of getting a place?

Is there a certain, limited number of places for international students or is it just a free for all and those who are best get the places, international or not?

Or does it depend on each university? My daughter is thinking of human or animal medicine which are both obviously high oversubscribed and already difficult to get into.

Thanks and sorry if its a silly question but I've been bothered by this, despite only being Y8 at the mo! I know there is a further rumour of fees being reduced again but only to £7500 per year and not necessarily the oversubscribed courses.

I think the universities certainly have some quotas - Scottish unis have quotas for scottish and EU students ie those that they won't get much money from, it as noticeable during clearing that there were separate lists of available courses - far more places available for those paying fees..

EU students have to pay the £9000 in England at present and other overseas rather more - not sure if there are quotas for overseas students, many more are offered unconditional places eg US students are offered unconditional places in the UK based on SATS and high school record .. not on any final exams.

Can't see the fees going down at popular unis now
