First female newsreader in 1960 axed after seven broadcasts

The first female newsreader Ann Winton has just died.
She was chosen carefully to be acceptable to the audience but was axed after just seven broadcasts in 1960 as viewers did not feel it was "appropriate" for the news to be read by a woman.
Thank goodness this is now a non issue. DG
