Personal statement

Post by nervousmom »

DS is struggling with this and doesn't really know where to start.
He is interested in mechanical engineering and is very interested in Elon Musk, so was thinking about bringing this into his statement and tying it in with his EPQ.
Any pointers or advice would be extremely welcome.

Have a search back over past threads as well. There had been quite a bit of chat about PS in the past.

The main pointers to all students writing PS-

The primary aim is to demonstrate your interest in the course and why you will be able to perform well.

2/5 should be on each of these areas.

1/5 can be non-subject specific extra curricular but still demonstrate relevance.

Assuming the EPQ is subject related then its great to talk about in the main part of the PS.
As far as talking about EM or anyone else, its important to stay on task but it certainly could be used to demonstrate wider reading and, importantly, analysis.

I advise writing the two headings ( interest & ability)
on a card and have it in front of you as you write.
Then read back and check you have stayed on track.

There is debate about how many PS are ever read but if they are then the reader will be wading through a large number.
Its fine to make it stand out but also spell out your points clearly, dont leave them to join up the dots.
