accepting 2nd place but being on waiting list for 1st choice

We have been offered our second choice. But our 1st choice has offered us to be on the waiting list. Does anyone know if we can accept our second choice and still be on the waiting list for our 1st choice? Or do we have to appeal?

I'm guessing we can accept our 2nd place offer but be on the waiting place in case we get lucky.... I just want to be sure....

Thats exactly right. Accepting your second choice means you have a place there but are still on waiting list for your first choice
