CGP Full Length Test - Maths section timing
Hi,
Has anyone attempted the CGP full length CEM tests please? I am puzzled with the Maths section timing in particular. Rest all seem inline with expectation.
CGP 10 mins Maths tests have 12 questions. But the full length tests have 20+ questions in 9 minutes. Not that they are easy mental questions. They are proper questions from all areas. Which is a good indicator of time please can anyone comment?
DD completes the 10 minutes tests in 6 to 7 minutes easily. But could not cope with 9 minutes, took 13 minutes for 23 questions.
Any pointers please which timing is more reliable?
Many thanks

I'm afraid that 20+ questions in 9 minutes is exactly the kind of speed expected in a CEM test. I'd say from my son's experience that about 20 seconds a question is about the pace that you need to aim for for the real thing. At this stage is be aiming for accuracy rather than speed, and gradually build up until your child gets faster. The speed will come with time.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

Hi loubylou22,
Thank you very much for the information. She finishes VR and NVR on-time but not Maths in the full-length tests. Will keep on encouraging her on both speed and accuracy. Thank you again.

What you have to understand, is that these are cohort tests.
It doesn't matter if there are 3 questions or 30 in a 8 minute section.
Your child's "job" is not to get all the questions right!!
It is simply to get MORE questions right than 70% of the other kids.
They will "pass" if they are in the top 30% of raw marks.
CEM relies on pacing to discriminate betweeen the more and less able candidates: it does this by having either too many "easy" questions to do in the time available, or a mix of "easier" and "harder" questions, knowing that few children will finish.
But yes, it is that fast. Which is why practice helps the kids cope as best they can with the pace.
