CEM 11+ VR - Odd one out

Post by YesWeCan »

Hello everyone, My daughter is struggling with odd one out questions in verbal reasoning. I would be grateful if anyone can suggest good revision books for this type of questions. She seems to be doing okay with other types like synonyms, antonyms etc. Losing lot of marks in odd one out questions. She will be appearing for exam this September and hence looking for some resources (either books or any other resource) particularly to revise odd one out qs. Thank you.

Which CEM is she sitting?

This section is a lot about general knowledge which is hard to fix in a few weeks. Can you break it down and work out which ones she finds difficult within the category?

It can be about the structure of the word, the sound of the word or the meaning of the word. DG

Thanks for your reply DG. She will be sitting hbs and swherts. Is this type commonly given in these 2 tests?

Among the 3 subtypes you mentioned, we are not sure (still!) which type she is struggling with :( . That is why, I wanted to have some resources of this type of questions so that we can identify this and work with them. I could find specialised books for synonyms/Antonyms etc, but could not find any with odd one out type of questions.

You must be able to see in her answers which type she is getting wrong.

What CEM material are you using?

SW Herts is 100% English VR so they will need to have a greater range of material than CEM exams where the English VR is 50% such as HBS. DG

My DS is having the same issue with 'Odd one out' questions and is getting low marks in this section on the mocks done so far. Sitting for CEM in Ilford,Essex this Sept 2017.
Any quick fixes..?

Surely you can see to a certain extent where the problem lies if you get her to explain why she thought the particular wrong option that she chose was correct?

Unless there is a total mismatch between the level of the synonym / antonym type questions and the 'odd one out' ones on the same paper, it seems strange that someone could be good at the first and awful at the second.

Thanks Toadmum. She is not particularly awful, but is weaker on odd ones when compared to syn/ant questions. In the mocks, she scored less marks on odd one qs. As the mocks provider does not give the questions that she got wrong, I cannot actually find which types she is getting wrong. That's the reason I was searching for a resource with this type of questions, so that we can understand where the problem is. If any of you know the resource/books that I could be using to identify the problem, it will be really helpful to us.

Sorry, I misunderstood - I assumed that your DD was having problems in pratice tests she was doing at home.

So did I. You did not mention mocks.

You need to be doing CEM papers at home so you can see which ones she gets wrong and why and not relying on mocks where you cannot see the questions.

Mocks are to check progress, they are not a tool which enables you to learn how to answer the questions.

If you do an odd one out section at home you will be able to find out which ones she is getting wrong and why.
