Sitting CEM exams in Bucks & Slough - first score counted?

Post by jackman »

My DD wrote the CEM exam for Bucks and for Slough consortium this year. We are awaiting the results.

I noticed in an earlier thread (now closed) that CEM only take the result for the first attempt.

Will that mean that the bucks exam score will be shared with slough consortium and the slough consortium actual score will be deemed invalid.

I know of pupils who have written 1-2 more CEM exams (different dates so different papers), but they are not aware that only first attempt of any CEM paper is counted.

It only applies of the same CEM Test is taken twice.
Slough and Bucks are two different CEM tests so they will both be marked separately and your DD will still get two different scores, one for each.

So, kids who have attend multiple CEM tests on different dates will get as many scores?

(somewhere I read that there are around 10-11 different CEM regions around the country)

Also, how do CEM detect that the pupil is attending the same test at two places, do they flag it at the time of application or just use the first attempt score without informing the schools/consortium or the parent?

If schools are in a consortium the CEM test they have commissioned will be the same and when someone applies they are told to choose where to take the test, asked if they want to share with other schools in the consortium and reminded that they can only take the test once for that consortium. If anyone slipped through the net and managed to get a late sitting at a school having already sat it in a consortium school, only their first test would count.

They may still get different standardised scores from each consortium school though as the standardisation is made based on the cohort for that school.

A candidate could take a CEM test in Birmingham and another down south but these would be differently commissioned tests.

For info, though it may be a bit different this year.

Schools using the same test should do the test on the same day. As KCG says, in theory no child should be able to sit the same test at a different school on a later date, but in practice it might happen. I suspect CEM match names, dobs, addresses and other info and spot any that slip through.

...And...if anyone did get a place on the basis of sitting the same test twice in a consortium, (and used the second sitting result) it is pretty clear in the info provided by CEM and the consortium schools that the place could be withdrawn, forthwith, so I suspect it would be a foolish parent who tried it!

Thanks!! Where do CEM publish this information? Is there a document somewhere?

From the 2018 admissions policy document on the website of Chelmsford County High School for Girls;

Nature and Timing of the tests
Chelmsford County High School for Girls is part of a group of Grammar Schools
who will be using a common admissions test on Saturday 16 September 2017 for
September 2018 entry.
The group includes Chelmsford County High School for Girls, Woodford County
High School for Girls, Ilford County High School for Boys, the Slough Consortium of
Grammar Schools, Reading and Kendrick. In addition, there are other schools in the
wider geographical area who will be using the same test on the same day. The tests
will take place on Saturday 16 September 2017. Applicants for any of these schools
may only take the test once; the raw marks from the test will be passed to the other
schools for inclusion in the appropriate standardisation sample but only if you have
registered with each school in accordance with their admissions policy. The
responsibility to complete this process accurately lies wholly with the parent/guardian.

If it is found that an applicant has taken the test more than once, the raw scores for the first attempt will be used for the standardisation process.

For all these schools, for which all candidates sit the same exam on the same main date, CEM will collate the details of each candidate who is to have their raw scores standardised in the cohort registering their interest in each school, wherever they actually sat the exam. The 'schools in the wider geographical area' include the Gloucestershire grammar schools.
