HBS reported only 2086 scores for this test. What does the 2334 represent? The number of girls who registered for the exam? Or did 248 girls sit the test but not receive scores?

The school itself quotes a variety of figures for "applicants"

In this case, I'd assume that 248 were no-shows on the day.

DG, do you happen to know the number that sat this year? I've heard rumours that it was over 3,000, it can't have gone up by 1,000 in a year can it?

There are wild rumours every year.

A couple of years ago, people on this forum were posting estimates of 4000 on the day of the QE exam. The total ended up being 2400, AFTER the reserve sitting!

We won't know for sure until schools are forced to divulge info to FOI requests, but 3000 is probably a touch over the top!!

Of that 422 only 235 actually put it first.

Can I ask how you know this? I understood that schools are not told what order a person has put the schools on their CAF.

It was quoted in the recent adjudication determination - here:

So whilst schools may not know where individual parents have ranked them on the CAF, totals seem to be available.

This is what that document says:

Against the PAN of 93 for entry in September 2017, 2334 applicants completed the first round test; the local authority states that the school received 422 applications, of which 235 were first preferences.

The bold formatting is mine. I agree that the use of the word 'applicants' is misleading.

Never mind that, the school itself quotes a variety of figures for places available. Every year. You'd imagine someone would need to tell the caretaker how many chairs to put in each classroom!

You've been here longer than I have. I'm sure you know that, every year, people name selective schools on their CAF without having bothered to enter DC for the exam!!

However, even though this is (adopts suitably reverent tone) HBS, it is reasonable to assume that the 422 for actual applicants is more or less accurate -rather than all 2399 / 2172 / 3333 or whatever who registered their DDs to sit the test putting the school down on their CAF.

I probably shouldn't be telling you, but I've seen a draft of the round 2 maths paper. It contains the following question:

Q17 (or Q27, depending on who you ask)

(a) In 2016, the number of girls who applied for a place at Henrietta Barnett School was: 2,399 according to the headmistress; 2,172 according to the admissions department; and 3,333 according to unreliable internet sources. Given that the ACTUAL number of applicants was 422, what was the mean number of imaginary applicants?

(b) Out of the 422 applicants, only 235 ranked the school in first place on their CAF. So why did we make such a pig's ear of the bandings?

@hbsseal: None actually. On 1st of March we were WL 37 but couple of days later we were told that two people dropped and our position moved to WL 35. Since then, WL movement was matching our movement as at position 35.

I don't have FOI list. It might have been compiled as of 1st of March which meant those two places were still there. Which months is at 141?

Also, two girls started today at HBS, so two places became available recently.

Here is the list of months for ranks 128 to 150. #141 is October and #130 is August, which might be the two relevant ranks if original WL was 37.
