Latymer announced Admissions arrangements for Sep 2019

Post by StowMum »

Hi All,

Just seen on Latymer School website that the admissions arrangements for entry to Year 7 commencing September 2019 are now available for review and comment. Seems that exams will take place in September :D

Any thoughts?

The link is here: http://www.latymer.co.uk/admissions/yea ... cument.pdf

It seems to have an 'all other children' criteria this time around - ie if there aren't enough Inner Area children in the top 650, out of catchment children will be admitted.

The test date is 2 September. Online registration is open between Monday 18 June and Tuesday 3 July.

Hi Streathammum, thanks for adding the link (I couldn't work out how to do it)
Do we know if they will be using the GL or the CEM format?

As expected they have abandoned their July first round which was a terrible idea as it was just a mock for everyone sitting in September.

Interesting they have chosen a Sunday but probably to avoid the DAO exams that are on Saturday 1st September and Monday 3rd September.

All three exams are the same format as last year but they have adopted the DAO format of only marking the English papers of those who are in the top 650 after the Maths and VR are marked. This means that GL Maths and VR remains the first round as CEM is the first round at DAO.

It will be a very busy three days for those sitting DAO and Latymer. Six exams in three days. DG

I don't know about the test format.

This proposed criteria is a mess, again. It includes this paragraph, which is similar to the one in this year's criteria:

"The School will be oversubscribed when there are more applications than places available. Each year the number of applications far outweigh availability. The school will therefore apply the over-subscription criteria shown below to candidates living in the Inner Area (see Note 1). Those applicants wishing to apply from outside of our published criterion (Inner Area) can do so and will be invited to sit the assessment tests. However, when determining the final ranking of the top 650 candidates, priority will be given to those applicants who are resident in the Inner Area as of 12 January 2019; thereafter the application will be withdrawn."

But it also says:

"If after all of the above oversubscription criteria has been applied to candidates living in the Inner Area, the school finds that it has vacancies to fill, those candidates living outside of the Inner Area, who are ranked within the top 650 candidates after the results of the Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and English test will then be considered for any vacancies in rank order."

So why does it say that 'applications will be withdrawn' from out of catchment children?

From the FAQ section on the website it seems they will use CEM: http://www.latymer.co.uk/admissions/year-7/faq" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Is this a change from last year?

Interesting....
In the event of the school not having capacity to test all candidates on Sunday 2 September 2018, the school will use
Monday 3 September 2018 to fulfil capacity.
Test clashes – unfortunately, clashes with other selective schools that also have assessment tests is sometimes
4
unavoidable. The school will be unable to offer alternative test dates.
So if a DC is sitting DAO on Monday 3 September and they have the Monday slot for Latymer as well, the school is not willing to offer alternative dates?

Also if a DC is going for DAO music it would be 4 days of exams in a row! It feels like they are forcing parents to make a decision between the schools.

We were 95% sure that my DC was not going to sit Latymer (mainly due to the school journey), think this has made it 100%.

It clearly says GL for Maths and VR and then the English department will write the English paper, this is all the same as last year.

Only thing that is different is that you sit all three papers on the same day, Sunday 2nd September or Monday 3rd September (this is the date of the DAO Maths test) they mark Maths and VR first and then only the top 650 will then have their English papers marked.

They would be very unwise to make parent choose between sitting DAO and sitting Latymer so hopefully those sitting DAO will be allocated the Sunday 2nd September date and then there will be no clash.

Six papers in three days.

Will some parents decide to sit only one of the two schools? DG

Thanks for confirming. I was confused as the FAQ section on the Latymer website states "WHO SETS AND MARKS THE ASSESSMENT TESTS? The assessment tests are set by CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring); the answer sheets will be marked using Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)."
