Did you research this before applying for a place, or is this for September 2019? It's a very long way with terrible traffic. I would be surprised if there is a school bus as not many people would attempt the journey, but I may well be wrong. Public transport looks to be about 2 hours, and google maps tells me it is about 45 minutes to drive just now, in the middle of the day (admittedly a snowy day), so presumably easily as long in the rush hour.

contrary to reply of scary mum...many children travel from hillingdon, greenford, ruislip, pinner etc.

There are a few private coaches who pick up and drop off back home.

dm me and i will send you a few numbers

Pinner is quite a long way from Hillingdon, probably half way to the school? Are there no decent schools in Hillingdon, where your son would have local friends & plenty of time after school to do homework/relax/socialise with his local friends? The journey to school isn't just about the commute, it's about joining in teams/plays, parents' evenings etc etc. I speak as someone who traveled a fair distance to school, but there was a lot less traffic in those days.

Scary mum - if children travel from Kent and Surrey to HBS, it makes Hillingdon to QE look like a short hop.

I sense people no longer ask about such distances because they know the responses they'll get.

It doesn't make it a sensible or desirable option. I think we are just hoping people will think about what they are doing rather than being blinded by the words "grammar school". The children who qualify for these schools are bright & will do well at any school they go to, possibly better if they aren't traveling for hours every day. Grammar schools get fabulous results, because they cherry pick the children who they admit.

Scary mum - we agree on that for sure.

I've recently thought that this website is being used for detailed 'insider" info on the exams, but there is another forum out there where all the "how do I get to HBS/QE from Surrey?" Qs are posted and answered. Meanwhile kids local kids within a mile of these schools are getting the NLCS/Habs coaches and would thrive at such a local selective school.

Getting off my soapbox now!

Totally agree. There needs to be a catchment area restriction. Perhaps taking atleast 10% from same borough of barnet.

At least 80% places should be from local catchment of upto 8 km radius. Rest upto 10-12 km radius, that way kids could have some sensible travelling arrangements.
