Re: QEB or DAO
I know the family who are now third on the waiting list at DAO and their rank is in the early 130's so as you were on Rank 125 you must be on second or first.
Make sure you have signed up to stay on the continuing interest list. At this point schools are asking parents to let them know they wish to stay on the list so they don't waste timing making phone calls if a space comes up.
DAO and QE are not very very different schools, they are not even very different schools.
Every year I spend a lot of time helping parents decide between them and I then continue to deal with both sets of families as their students progress through the schools.
The differences are slight. Both are stuffed full of students who worked very hard to get there and have a very strong work ethic.
Both have students who have parents who wanted them to go there and it really wasn't their choice.
Both have students who start well and then get distracted by other things.
I do agree that QE has a more formal relationship between the teachers and the students but perhaps this works better in a boy school.
DAO lets their students choose which A levels to do, QE uses internal tests to offer A levels to their students rather than let them choose.
All students at QE are able to stay on but may not get to do their first choice A levels.
DAO students have to apply to get into the sixth form and do well enough at GCSE to gain a place.
DAO has a stronger focus on Music but QE is able to have sports like waterpolo becuase of their lovely pool.
But the main thing linking both schools is that students who are academic and want to work hard can really soar at both schools. And students who have other interests are also able to pursue them.
DAO has 28 students with Oxbridge places this year and lots of students who have secured their first choice university.
There are also several students off to Conservatoire and others off to drama school and dance academy.
I am sure your son will do well at QE and you can stay on the waiting list for DAO and perhaps consider moving to DAO for sixth form. DG

Re: QEB or DAO
Thanks DG. I think he's next on the list for DAO. So near yet so far ...
I do want to stay on the list as DAO is still my preferred option only really due to the A level issue.
It's very early days but so far the subjects he may need to do aren't his strongest and I am thinking he will have to move for A levels. We have a long way to go though and a lot can change especially if he works hard which he knows he has to do.
I was under the impression that the two schools were wildly different so that's reassuring.
Having said that so far he is enjoying it and yesterday said that QE is definitely the school for him.
I'm certainly expecting him to grow up fast!
Hopefully as time moves on I can share our experience through this forum.

Re: QEB or DAO
Great news that he really likes it.
He probably will not want to move if a space comes up.
I do not think you need to worry about the A levels at QE.
If he works hard and makes sure he is putting his fullest attention on the subjects he might want to do for A level he will probably be fine.
It is just a space issue. QE does not have room for all the boys that want to do A level Maths at sixth form so they allocate the spaces to the boys that are the strongest in Maths.
If he wants to do a subject he is not allocated then there are plenty of local sixth forms that would be very glad to have him including DAO and Latymer. There were several boys from QE in both my dd's years in sixth form. DG
