HBS applies to govt for funds to expand to five form entry
The Governors have decided to apply and Barnet Council have confirmed their support.
Barnet Council asked HBS to expand a couple of years ago, HBS confirmed their interest and it was approved by the council but was put on hold for political reasons.
The deadline for consultation is July 17th and HBS will hold an open meeting for parents in July, date/time to be confirmed. DG

Can you explain why they are asking for funding? More students automatically mean more cash - this is why most GS have expanded.

What are they actually talking about in terms of numbers? Presumably they already have a good number of general classrooms able to accommodate more than 30, since they seem to have gone from three forms of 32 per year to four of 25(?26) in the recent past.

Aside from the proposed increase in numbers, the HBS consultation proposes a tighter oversubscription criteria, wider access for girls from less privileged backgrounds and a preference for girls from Barnet.

They are planning to increase from 100 per year (although I think it is actually 104 - 4 forms of 26 each) to 150 - 5 forms of 30.

And it also looks like they are moving towards a catchment criteria alongside an expanded preferential criteria for pupil premium recipients.Middlesexmum wrote:They are planning to increase from 100 per year (although I think it is actually 104 - 4 forms of 26 each) to 150 - 5 forms of 30.

Sounds like great news.

Looking on this forum, it would seem there are numerous GSs that are bidding for finding to expand. My DDs GS are also putting a bid in.
There is a finite amount of funding for GS expansion available so I’d guess not every GS that puts in a bid will be successful.

Given the massive squeeze on school budgets from central government and the appalling financial position this is leaving many schools in, lots of oversubscribed schools are seeking to expand because they are guaranteed extra money that way. This is why grammar schools can get away with this in ways which less popular schools can't - it is almost certainly not related to the GS expansion programme, just the per capita funding. It is nothing to do with services to the community, blah blah, and everything to do with the cash. Look on the regional forums - almost every area is seeing this kind of thing. The losers will be less prestigious schools who can't rely on the extra applicants.

It s wrong to give money for this - they will get extra funding when the students arrive.
