Tutors & Qe

Post by ritz667 »

The reason why some parents use tutors at Qe is that the teaching and what is expected of the boys is at a much higher level than the GCSE exams across all the range of subjects but especially in science and maths.

The internal exams the boys sit to decide what A Level options they have are certainly testing and harder than the gcse exams therefore some boys may get tutored.

The work done in years 10 and 11 prepares them for what is expected at A Level and that is eventually reflected in the best results in the country especially at A Level.

Ritz667 - that's interesting. I'm aware the competition for maths and science A levels is extremely high. I doubt my DS would be able to A levels there in those subjects even with a tutor. A bit sad really as at the moment they're the ones he needs and he partly wanted to go to the school due to their expertise in those subjects. Nevertheless, if he works hard he should get GCSE results he can be proud of (I'm not saying that wouldn't be the case in any other school).

There are some who profess that they are at QE and don't having a tutor but doing extra work at home with a parent or doing extra themselves is also in the same category no?

The boys I know currently at QE are all getting tutored as one mum put it 'to stay at the top'. Even though these are very capable kids who scored very high on the entrance exam.

I wonder if these kids know no different, tutored from a young age?

Top school stays top - but only because nearly all the pupils have outside tutoring.

Possibly not the newspaper headline any school would like the Telegraph or whatever to run on a couple of Thursday in August  .

It's a mutually beneficial situation, of course. The school gets the kudos, despite the fact that it is gained through its teaching being bolstered by outside assistance paid for by parents. The students get the grades and their medical school / Russell Group (side issue - isn't it weird how many RG groupies spell it Russel?) university places, parents' choice of school - top again :D - is validated, even if partly through significant financial outlay on their part. Oh, and tutors from Greenford to Redbridge are quids in :D .

AML, I believe you don't have a boy at QE. Does my memory serve me right?

For the record, in all the time that he's been at QE, other than for the private and specialised study of music, Y11 DS has never had a tutor and I don't foresee him having a tutor. Ever. I don't tutor him either and he doesn't spend his time doing extra work. He does the set homework in, shall we say, the most efficient manner.

evmc, I have been reading your posts since around national allocation day and I know that you are disappointed and at the same time anxious about the QE place but it really shouldn't be all doom and gloom. It's true that some of the less mature boys can be competitive and they may be ahead of your boy in early assessments in Y7 and Y8 but all this can easily be reversed between Y7 and Y11. For example, many of the boys who will be in the top maths sets in Y7 may slip down once the curriculum moves beyond foundational material. On the flip side, I know of a boy who was in the lowest maths set in Y7 and is now studying the subject at Oxford.

If your boy does feel he's being left behind in class then encourage him to seek the help of his teachers during subject specific clinics. There really shouldn't be any need for tutors.

QE is a school that recognises and rewards endeavour as much as the achievement and I am sure that your boy's efforts will pay off.

Oh and remember that he should also have fun. It really shouldn't be all work. Encourage him to get involved in the extra-curricular, especially the sports. Games always lead to camaraderie.

Correct. I am quoting friends who have son at QE.

Do you think you are in the minority regarding tuition?

I don't know what year your son is but please don't worry to much about the A Level choices, I am sure he will do well.

Even if he does go to another school or 6th form college he will be prepared more than most on the A level work required to get the top grades.

Going from my son's experience at the school I don't think many boys do get tutored, certainly in his peer group there weren't any.

I am sure some tutoring happens as it happens in all schools whether they be private, state selective or state.

Ritz667 and nyr

Thank you for your posts and reassurances. I have also been reading your posts for some time because its great to hear from those with genuine experience of the school rather than those who offer lots of opinions but have no real knowledge (not saying that those posts aren't invaluable too on many occasions).
