OK - then the solution is simple - move the date to before the term starts or a weekend then they can use the hall, sports hall and other rooms.

Until now, the school has always been closed on exam day, so they can use all the rooms.
To maximise the number of sittings in one day, the boys are taken into the hall for the exam admin briefing before being spread out to classrooms to sit the exam. When the first batch are doing their 2nd paper, the next batch are taken into the hall, and so on through the day.
They have been running at full stretch in recent years. When DS sat it 3 years ago, he reported it being fairly smoothly run inside - but it is "organised?" chaos on the streets outside.
I assume they will pack in as many as possible on the first day, and have the 2nd as a spillover, which will hopefully allow the school to remain open.

So if the school is closed they must have room - it's asking for problems to spread it over two days.

I suppose they've seen the the numbers and decided they don't have room.
Apart from being an operational burden for staff, it doesn't create any new problem with regard to using the same paper, if that's what you're getting at.
I seem to remember a discussion here about Latymer leaving themselves the option of going to a second day, so the issue is not unique to QE.

Over recent years they have been having numbers of around 50 sitting the backup date a week later which is always the same paper.
So two different sittings is not a new problem and these two are consecutive days instead of a week apart.
There is a week between the DAO CEM date and the SW Herts CEM date and this is also the same paper.
When these two first went a week apart a percentage of parents attempted to register for both sittings of the CEM paper and the two applicants lists had to be checked very carefully.
Applicants do have to apply for both exams but those sitting DAO must identify themselves so they will only sit the SW Herts Maths paper.
At least QE does not have this problem and only has to deal with a single list of applicants. DG
