Do they have to solve 50 questions in 50 mins ? and if both English and Maths carry 100 scores each then how children are getting 240 or 230 as a minimum qualifying score ?

The maximum "standardised" score for each paper is 141. Add your two scores up to get a total (maximum 282).

This link doesnt exist anymore, but thanks for giving some idea about break up of score, so does it means there will be higher number of questions than 50 ? And do you know what is lowest qualifying score ? is it 230 or 240 ?

The link from Tinkers gives an indication of the relationship between percentile rank and standardised score.

Percentile rank is where, out of every 100 children, your child is ranked. It is not his percentage score in the test (percentage score and number of questions can vary to their hearts' content, rank is all that matters!)

Over the years, QE's final offer of seat number 180 has generally been made to a boy ranked in the mid 300's (not everyone who takes the test will actually apply for a place at the school and not everyone who applies will place QE as 1st choice).

So for us, 3 years ago, we were assuming approx 2000 boys took the test, so DS needed to be in the top 17% (percentile rank 83 and above). Percentile rank 83 should usually be a standardised score of approx 115 (so 230 over two papers). I think a score of 229 or 230 was the initial cutoff mark in his year.

But with the number of candidates now nearer 2500, you need to be at percentile rank 86 to be actual rank 350ish. The higher percentile rank equates to a higher standardised score, which is why the cutoff has crept above 230 in the past couple of years!

Nobody knows what the lowest score to get a place will be this year.

That will depend on the applicants and not on the school.

This year it was 229, last year it was 224. This year it could be over 230 if the pool of applicants is larger. DG

Good luck to all the boys sitting the exam tomorrow! I’m just going to be glad it’ll all be over My DS is going to have a relaxed evening of no work to keep him calm (really it’s because I’m too scared to give him a paper the night before and for him to make silly mistakes).

This was us last year so good luck all! Leave plenty of time, park away from the school and walk - there's NO parking near the school, don't park over anyone's driveway and don't park in the hospital. Instead, use the Spires carpark which is nearby. A lovely shopping centre with a Waitrose, plenty of coffee shops and restaurants and a Waterstones. It might help with the wait!
