I have a son in Year 13 at QE. As per nyr's comment, my son has had no external tutoring through his time at QE and was genuinely surprised when I mentioned to him the view that many of his peers have tutors. He knows of only one of his friends who had a tutor and that was to boost his confidence ahead of a particular GCSE exam. QE has lunchtime clinics in most if not all subjects and that is how he believes most address any gaps in their knowledge.

No tutors for my son at QE. Why would I waste my money? He's doing just fine and if he's not there are lunchtime clinics he can attend at school to cement any learning gaps.

My daughter knows many QE Boys; several are good friends now. Most of these boys have left QE after year 13, finishing in 2017. My partner and I also know some others.

Between us, we know only two who had Tutors: one in Year 11 for those Year 12 A Level internal 'selection' Tests and one for a particular subject in Year 9 recently.

Our daughter's old Tutor gets many requests for tuition for Merchant Taylors and Haberdasher Boys pupils and hardly any for QE pupils.

It's very easy to feel one knows what the real situation is based on what can only be a few anecdotal examples.

By the way, it would not be a source of shame or pain for me. I fully support any family doing its best to support their son as they see fit.

For the record, in all the time that he's been at QE, other than for the private and specialised study of music, Y11 DS has never had a tutor and I don't foresee him having a tutor. Ever. I don't tutor him either and he doesn't spend his time doing extra work. He does the set homework in, shall we say, the most efficient manner.
Correct. I am quoting friends who have son at QE.

Do you think you are in the minority regarding tuition?
No, I don't think so.

My view is that children will have needed very different amounts of effort and assistance in order to secure an 11+ place at their chosen selective school and this will probably be quite strongly linked to the amount of effort and assistance that will be required to keep up with the cohort or achieve to the levels that made the school desirable in the first place. I know that this is not a popular view.

No, not a popular view  . You are not entirely alone, though :) .

Interesting, the two 'sides' shown in this thread, though:

- of course boys have tutors to keep up with the standard the school requires, it is so much higher than that of bog-standard schools that only teach to GCSE level for their GCSE students, vs
- the school teaches them just fine, our DSs are keeping up to the required standard with no external input.

In the 6th year as a parent in the QE, I have only heard about one pupil getting tuition and this was because Mum knew better than the school. My son said nobody could understand it because he was always doing really well.

Sorry for stupid question... Super-selected boys in super selected school with super selected teachers need tutors to pass GCSE or A Levels.... how do children from normal comprehensive schools and colleges pass these tests than? Madness...

Super selected teachers? What’s one of those and how do I become one?

Not as hard as you might imagine, KS10. A search for staff vacancies at QE shows that they are advertising for an unqualified teacher of PE and Games, and a 'qualified or unqualified' teacher of Physics, though you need a Physics degree for that one.

I dislike the assumption that you have to be a better teacher to teach bright children.

It takes a great deal of skill to teach someone who doesn’t learn easily.
