11+ outcome 2018

Post by ale21279 »

Now that almost all exam results are out, and with CAF deadline looming ever closer, thought it might be interesting to share outcomes, experiences, lessons learned, how would you do things differently if you had to do it all again, etc?

I'll start:

Mocks taken: 2 (Sutton)
Exams taken: 2 (QEB, DAO)
Music exams: 2 (DAO, comp)
Selective places: 0
Other: music place at local comp
Method: tutor

Over to you guys, hope you were more successful than we were

Crikey, when you write it all out like that it does show up how crazy this whole system is. Here's ours:

Mocks taken: 2 (Sutton)
Exams taken: 4 (Sutton, Wandsworth, 2 x language aptitude)
Selective places: 1 borderline (Wallington Girls)
Other: 2 x selective places at partially selective schools, 1 x language aptitude place
Method: tutor - one on one, one hour per week, throughout Y5

I am sure there will be a lot of people who will not tell the truth and claim their child knew how to pass the technical exams without much help. Here is ours, hope it helps someone.

Mock tests (2 independent, 5 with SD, 5 with learning centre)
Exams (SwHerts, QE, Slough)
Exams registered, not taken (Birmingham, Wolverhampton)
Exams passed (Herts, Slough, QE)
Tutor: Wife is a teacher (home) one2one tutor (2hpw, group (3hpw)

Lot's of late evenings, RedBull+proplus! A bit like my finals :)

This is great. Please would you mind sharing the amount of work done each day including holidays and weekends. What kind of schedule did you follow? I work full time and my DS has group tutoring for English and Maths is taught at home by DH. Which books did you use?

I have been hearing a lot about BOFA and COAST and I am not sure if purchasing these subscriptions are worth.

Thank you

Mocks taken:4 (SD)
Exams taken: 3 (QEB, Latymer, Ilford County high)
Music exams: 0 (but he thinks he's a rock star in the making)
Selective places: 3 (passed all 3, Ilford County High enough to secure a definite place, Latymer - he will probably be on the waitlist but it is our first choice, QEB passed but not high enough so will be third)

Method: tutor (Group of 6 kids 1.5 hrs twice a week) but mostly done at home.

DS2 will be taking the exam next year so the insanity has started again

Really interesting, thanks for your replies.

Streathammum, we did a language aptitude test too, had forgotten about that one!

11nuts, what are the SD & learning centre mocks, if you're allowed to say on here? So did you do 5 hrs per week with tutor, plus work with mum at home?

We did group, one hr per week in Y4 and 3 hours per week in Y5.

Worrybot, I work nearly full time too. We generally did 2 hrs at weekend, one in the week. Plus summer classes in Y5. What are BOFA & COAST?

Where can we do a language aptitude test? It's the first time I am hearing of it.

BOFA and COAST are online learning programmes with online Mocks that you to subscribe to.
Thank you,

Thanks for posting- plenty food for thought...

Of the mocks I was wondering about doing 1 or 2.
I think I’ll be able to choose dates in May, June and/or August.
Any advice on which to go for? And how many?

Thx

For my DS1 he sat 4 mocks; one early in June and one in mid August (he sat two separate exam boards). We found them really helpful - the first set were great to work out which areas required more preparation. The second set of mocks gave us an indication of if he had improved; which he had. This gave DS the confidence he needed before sitting the real exams. The second set of mocks also allowed us to tailor the last couple of weeks to focus on any weak topics.
DS says the mocks helped him get used to the exam environment so he was less apprehensive on the day. DS2 will also sit the same set of mocks next year.

Hope this helps
