Some questions about Latymer

Post by JS85 »

So finally our 2 year DIY journey has come to a close with a top 192 ranking for Latymer.

Although we went to the open evening in July, we still have some questions about Latymer and would be grateful if anyone who has DCs there could shed some light.

1. Are there ability settings? If so, in what subjects, and from what year?
2. What is the selection criteria to do GCSE triple sciences?
3. What is the selection criteria to do A Level Further Maths?
4. How many A Levels do students do? Is 4 the norm?
5. Are there clubs for robotics/coding?
6. If students arrive early (before the bell at 8.35am) are they allowed into the buildings?
7. What are the transition/settling in arrangements for end of y6/beginning of y7?

Thanks in advance.

My son is in Y9 so what we know up to now:

1. Are there ability settings? If so, in what subjects, and from what year? Yes. Maths from Y9. +PE from Y7
2. What is the selection criteria to do GCSE triple sciences? Everyone does triple science
6. If students arrive early (before the bell at 8.35am) are they allowed into the buildings? 8am is the eariest unless a club
7. What are the transition/settling in arrangements for end of y6/beginning of y7? My son started in covid year so might be different. He had a meeting in the summer and Y7 starts a day early in September. they were also supposed to go to wales for a residential trip, but that never happened

Re the requirement to be allowed to take Further Maths, year 12 is a new formal point of entry (so even internal candidates have to meet the same requirements, whatever they are), and a long way off from year 7 entry. Your DC may want to, and qualify to, remain at the school for sixth form, or they may not (either of those). Or the school may have changed its sixth form admissions policy by then. Definitely not something on which to base a decision on at this stage.

My nephew was in Latymer from Y7 to Y13 and left 3 years ago. To take FM, he needed a letter of recommendation from the maths department. He studied 3 A levels and looking at the statistics on the school website, where there were 675 A level entries for 209 students in 2021/2022, this seems to be the case for the vast majority of students.

Hopefully the criteria for doing FM in the 6th form is that

a) are thought to be capable of doing it by the maths teacher

b) actually want to do it
