Hello all!

Our DD is in YR4 currently and I hope it's not too late to start prepping for a grammar school application (for September 2023)?

Our plan:
1. working through the VR, NVR, English + Maths Bond books
2. at what point do we move over to the GL booklets?
3. are there specific tutors that focus on HBS and would that be worth it?
4. Are there any other girls' Grammar schools we could consider (roughly North, Northeast or Southeast London)

Our DD is at a non-pushy prep school keen to have a go (even though the odds are staggering).

thanks in advance

Since HBS and the other grammar schools in London are state schools, not independents, you might get a better response posting in the relevant geographical area(s).

To the south east, there are grammar schools in the London Borough of Bexley and one for girls, Newstead Wood, in Orpington in the LB Bromley, but there can't be many places to live which are an easy commute to (or preferably within catchment for) HBS for a girl which are also convenient for the south east quadrant of Greater London, so are you looking to move house anyway?

If you are RC, there is St Michael's Catholuc Grammar in Finchley.

Mods can you move this to the Herts and North London region please?

The Bond books are not challenging enough. On 2019 figures your dd will need to beat 2700 other dds to obtain a place in the second round.

If you are able to move within 3 miles of the school she will get a place if she makes the second round.

As it is free many who sit have no real chance of a place as they have not done the preparation and many turn it down. Only half of those who ranked in the top ten actually took the place this year.

Application numbers reduced last year from 3,000 to 2,501 but no doubt they will rise again for September this year. DG

Thank you ToadMum. We could move so your suggestions are very welcome. Will look at those schools suggested.

Thanks so much for this DAO.

So instead of Bonds, would it be GL papers?

I found this in the forum here:

"11+ GL 10-Minute Tests by CGP & Letts and GL assessment papers (pack 1,2,3) on English, VR and NVR for stage 1 along with CGP, FPTP, AE GL assessment papers. for stage 2"

I’ve also seen SPAG mentioned, but then again it was said that they aren’t being used anymore?

It's a completely new world for us.
