Hi all/daogroupie(!)

Could you please let me know how many children are allocated places at DAO, and what proportion are through the assessment route?

My understanding is:

1000 kids take the VR test
325 are invited back to take the English and Maths test
Out of this, 100 are offered places
And a further 80 or so are sibling places/distance places

Obviously the sibling places varies year to year, but not sure about the "distance" places. What is the overall intake number in Year 7?

Thanks

Nobody is offered places unless they apply on the CAF form.

You need to be really clear about the difference between taking the exam and applying for the school.

As the DAO VR is the first exam, hundreds take the exam as a mock and have no intention of applying to the school.

The PAN (published admission number) is 200 and there are certain numbers that do not change.

The 22 closest to the school on distance, the 20 Islington places, the 10 music places and the 65 academic places.

Numbers that change are looked after children, siblings, staff children and any other places left over that go to distance children which is the last criteria.

If there is a big sibling year then sometimes there are no places left for the last criteria.

Sometimes there are so many siblings they need to go over PAN to be able to offer all the Music and Academic places so then they put on another class.

Again I stress that when the exam results are sent out in October nobody is offered a place as nobody has applied for the school, only the exam.

However those ranked in the top ten in music and in the top sixty five of the exam will be offered a place if they apply and rank DAO as their first preference. They will also be offered a place if they rank DAO at a lower preference and are not allocated a space at a higher preference school. DG

Thanks daogroupie.

How does the waiting list work, because I noticed on previous threads that children of rank 90 or 100+ get offered a place. Obviously some children pick other schools - so how does DAO know about it before it is too late (ie before parents of kids with a rank of 66+ pick other schools). Do parents of children with a rank 66+ speculatively apply for a seat?

some parents still put the schools they really want on the CAF and then put a more "likely to be successful " choice lower down - if they are not offered the higher choice they can be on the waiting list for them and may get offer that way

You apply for your choices with ranked preferences.

If your rank is not high enough for a space in March you stay on the waiting list.

You will only be allocated one school. If a place comes up at a school you have ranked higher you will be given a couple of days to accept before the place will be offered to the person who is the next rank.

If you accept a higher ranked school you will be removed from the waiting list of the other schools.

You can only remain on the waiting list of schools that you have ranked higher than the school you are currently holding.

After time has passed some have bought the uniform and choose to stay with their lower ranked place and so are then removed from the DAO ranked waiting list.
