DAO are increasing score for music 1st round from 47 to 50
DAO have released their draft proposed admissions criteria for next year.
This now has to be on their website for anyone who wants to comment on.
Main change is increasing the score required to pass the music 1st round from 47 to 50.
This is a big jump; the last increase was 46 to 47.
Clearly far too many students are passing the first round, far more than they need for just 10 places.
This puts a lot of pressure on the music department which then has to organise and hold a separate audition for each 2nd round candidate.
The success of reducing the numbers in the second round of the academic applicants to 325 has clearly shown them that they can do the same for Music.

Wow, all 3 kids that I know who got music places at DOA in the last few years would have not cleared first round, two are true music geniuses. Not good for DAO as this standardised test advantages piano players as well.

The 5 DC I know of who reached the second round this year (3 of whom got 1 of the ten places including 1st) had the following scores: 57 52 51 51 49.
So only one would not have got through on the new min score of 50.
They had far too many auditions to do for 10 places and the impact on the teaching in the department was great.
It is the right decision. DG
