Really not sure

Post by MforMother »

Hi - I was just hoping for some views. We are about 30 mins from QE and 20 mins from Latymer (in catchment). Child is bright, more so in Maths than English and very sporty. Achieved 227 at QE (understand this might be wait list?) and in 430s for Latymer (possible wait list too?) We are totally split between the two schools and would be so happy to go to either school, if we were lucky enough. DH says we should put QE first as even if we get to the WL then wouldn't ruin chances of getting Latymer. What in your opinion would be the real outcome if we put QE first choice or Latymer first choice? Thank you in advance for any advice!

You must put the schools in the genuine order of preference - if you put QE first and don't get it, it will not affect your chance of getting Latymer. You can go on the waiting list of any school that cannot offer you a place

Put QE boys first because it is very very unlikely that the ranks will reach 227 on March 1st.

Last year it only reached 235 on allocation day and only dropped to 232 by September.

So it stopped 5 marks away from your score and each year it tends to rise a couple of marks so I think it is very very unlikely it will reach 227 at all.

QE clearly thinks so as you were not able to go on the tour. Only 229 and above scores were invited for the tour.

On the other hand your 430 rank will go up as Latymer will remove all the non catchment ranks and you will be able to contact them and find out what your new rank is.

Here is an actual example from last year: a 2nd round rank of 395 which moved up to 272 when the non catchment ranks were removed.

This applicant is now in Y7 at Latymer and got straight in on allocation day and was not on the waiting list.

So you have a much better chance of a place at Latymer but you can keep your preference for QE open by putting it first.
