Thanks DaoGroupie, We received the initial WL email from school and now that 16 has been offered place, school doesn't provide us an updated WL number despite asking. We couldn't just go by subtracting 16 from <original WL number> as there may also be secondary interests . Do you know how we get to know the current WL number after offers?
On checking with Council, we still get our original WL number as response.

Hey mum_oftwo, when i emailed school last week, they said they will not provide new WL number but they said you can deduct the last allocated wl number and that will be your new number. For secondary interests they gave time till April 16th I think.

If anyone joins the list above you (or withdraws, for that matter), then the 'subtract the number admitted from your old number to give your new one' thing really doesn't work. Plus paragraph 2.15 of the Admissions Code states that the waiting list must be reranked whenever a child is added to it.

Is it really so difficult for the school to maintain its waiting list correctly and provide up to date information to parents?

Thanks LK87 , I didnt know the deadline for secondary interest is 16 april. Thanks for this information. My last allocated WL number has not changed from 1st march till early this week. Spoke to school and council. From school, all I hear is that WL number 16 been offered. Council sent me my original WL number 2 days ago(same as of 1st March).
Thanks ToadMum, this is exactly my thoughts, updated number from school/council will give us peace :)

What people have is a waiting list position. Number always makes me think of the ticket machine in Clarks shoe shops and is not appropriate in this case, as waiting lists are, by law, at least potentially dynamic. Having a personal number brings to mind the question as to whether these schools are ignoring the Admissions Code and allocating waiting list numbers according to when the applicant joins the waiting list, instead of according to their ranking wrt the oversubscription criteria...

Or, quite possibly for a school like HBS, no-one has joined the waiting list in a high position.

Of course, it's possible for someone new to join, but the likelihood is that anyone who got into the 2nd round and wanted to go to HBS is already on the waiting list.
