If anyone thinks what I wrote was derogatory then they have led a very sheltered life!
The competition for grammars must be greater as there are simply fewer children who have parents who can afford to pay fees and so there will be fewer candidates. Most bright children will not be taking anything other than grammar tests because the can't afford to go . Except to CH of course which is a different kettle of fish.
Indies offer bursaries because they have to to avoid losing their charitable status and to bulk up their intake of bright children.

Couldn't agree with you more, especially as these discounts are often awarded to children who are already attending Independent schoools.
BTW one fairly local Indie School has offered a full boarding and tuition fees bursary for a child from a family who would not normally consider an Independent education. It's a shame that this kind of offer is the exception rather than the rule (and more of a shame that the sort of children who would benefit would not always have their needs met by the state sector).

Some people might not realise that even the uniform is provided by CH at no cost to parents. All parents buy is sports kit! In addition, if a pupil decides to take up a musical instrument, these lessons are also charged in proportion to the fee assessment. So some children pay nothing at all for their lessons, some pay a small amount etc. CH is very worthy of it's charitable status.
