My appeal: Parmiter's no. 1

My ds was being assessed for possible aspergers/dyspraxia at the time of the appeal. His small group of friends were going to Parmiters. We felt (correctly as it turns out) that he would find the transition to secondary very difficult due to his social and physical problems. They had a group of similar children they were admitting and their pastoral care is outstanding.

Evidence from school and doctor to confirm.

Result: appeal failed.

My dd was ill immediately after the test, doctor's letter to confirm. Evidence to show she was level 6 in all core subject from the school and therefore underperformed in test.

Result appeal failed.

Tense - WGSB / Parmiters are two of my local school, Ricky is not but we applied due to their specialism as at the time we felt they had a lot to offer our child. That said I live within ten miles of all the schools mentioned..... How many Kids are allowed to apply to schools much further away! - but yes this is a different debate.

I did not major on what the other school could not offer I emphasised the strengths of the school I wanted and why my Son would fit in both socially and academically I only concluded that my DS would be prejudiced if he were to attend his allocated school as he nothing in common with anything the school had to offer.

At the time I was employed to write winning business cases for presentation to directors of a major PLC so without sounding big headed my presentation would have been good!

Watmum66 - not sure it is still around but a similar case was posted on the appeals board last year (I will see if I can find it!).

Thanks for your comments. We went to Queens school last night too and we were very impressed, that we knew we wouldnt be too upset if the outcome for the grammar appeal was unsuccessful.
We appealed on the grounds of high academic ability, achieving 100% in maths exams. At the time of the exam he had been unwell and also emotionally upset because his father was going through serious heatlh issues being in and out of hospital. We also live not too far from the school , within walking distance and going to a school further away would cause strain on the family as his father is awaiting a liver transplant. We also have another comprehensive school on our doorstep, we argued that he couldnt go their because of our experience with our two other sons, we felt the school had let them down.
We are just relieved its all over and we are content with the place he got at Queens.

watdad and tooney thankyou for your posts I am sure they will help other's decide re appeals. IMHO I thought you both had strong cases.
Does not look like an appeal for the family I know will work thanks for finding the thread from last year.

I came on here about a year / 18 month ago, for me the advice helped me construct my case. It helped me understand the process and the advice was very useful. In addition the support I got from mods (Etienne in particular) and also form other users was invaluable and helped keep my spirits up.

However did I learn anything about the SW Herts consortium appeals, what might and what might not work? NO! If anything reading the experiences and also the stories of others it actually raised my hopes as I thought I had a bolt on case but unfortunately I failed.

The process of appealing for an oversubscribed school is basically the same everywhere. See the Q&As section C for an explanation of the two-stage process.

I'm sorry to say that the average success rate for foundation schools is below the national average, and even worse for VA schools.

I'm afraid moderators have no particular knowledge of Watford appeals. I looked at the website for Watford Boys but could find no details about how their appeals are organised. I'm aware that the school is partially selective - you need to be clear what it is you are appealing for. The appeal papers will, I hope, clarify whether this is just an appeal against oversubscription, or whether there is a selective element.

It's entirely up to VA and foundation schools whether they arrange their own appeals, or opt to delegate responsibility to the local authority.

Sadly there are primary schools around that will not co-operate with any form of selection for political reasons.

My advice would be to keep as many options open as is practicable.

Having set the ground rules, as it were, we then tried to help in putting forward the best case we could construct.

However, even a very good case isn't necessarily going to work if you come up against a strict panel.

Please do not get me wrong I am not trying to imply you didn’t help…..

I am merely trying to make the point that the ‘usual’ debates for what ever reason do not work and that anybody appealing in this area goes into it with their eyes wide open.

I did say they advise I received was very helpful and well intended although as stated by yourself there is very little knowledge of how it works with the Herts consortium. Thanks for your help I only hope I can help others learn from my experiences.

I know 3 families that won their appeal at R last year, all from my son's primary and to put it quite harshly, the panel must have found their cases/situations more deserving.

Last year toony was saying (based on undisclosed sources) that Ricky normally let in 8-10, but only 1 out of 60 succeeded at Parmiter's.
