Mathematical Operations

My DS struggles, as much as I do, how to perform different operations in a given sequence. Can someone explain how to solve the followings with some explanations please?

(a) 5.3 + 4.7 x 10 =

(b) 4 – (5+7) -:- 3 =

(c) 14 + (24 – 4 -:- 2) =

(d) (12 + 6 X 2) – 14 -:-5 + 2 =

(e) 30 + 15 -:- 3 X 2 – 14 + (5-8) =

(-:- is the division)

Thanks in advance

Used BIDMAS: anything in Brackets (within which Bidmas also applies), followed by powers of (Indices), Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction

(a) 5.3 + 4.7 x 10 = 5.3 + 47 = 52.3

(b) 4 – (5+7) -:- 3 = 4 - 12 /3 = 4 - 4 = 0

(c) 14 + (24 – 4 -:- 2) = 14+ (24 -2) = 14 + 22 = 36

(d) (12 + 6 X 2) – 14 -:-5 + 2 = (12 + 12)- 2.8 + 2=24-2.8+2 = 23.2

(e) 30 + 15 -:- 3 X 2 – 14 + (5-8) = 30 + 5 x 2 -14 + (-3)=30+10-14-3=23

I hope these are right.

BIDMAS/BODMAS - brackets first then indices the division/multiplication then addition/subtraction:

(a) 5.3 + 4.7 x 10 = 5.3 + 47 (ie do x first then add)

(b) 4 – (5+7) divide by 3 = 4 - 12 divide by 3 (do bracket first) = 4 - 4 (do division next) = 0

(c) 14 + (24 – 4 divide by 2) = 14+ (24 - 2) = 14 + 22

Does that help a bit?

fm and Guest 55, many thanks for you all. Guest55, the web site you mentioned was really helpful and DS enjoyed. He now fully understand how to do that type of questions.

Many Thanks again

Just dipped into this thread - I've never come across bidmas/bodmas before - is this something that is likely to appear on ann 11plus paper?
Thanks!

It's something they get taught in yr4 so would probably help in the maths paper if they know it.
