Omega 3

Post by Villagedad »

Hi
Does anyone regularly give their DC Omega 3 supplements, and have they seen any change in their performance and/or concentration levels?

Just thought I'd ask before embarking on this in the future with our DC...

Many thanks

Hi Villagedad, that post made me laugh.

Well I have given my dd this supplement for approx 18 months.

My dd has shot up in her grades at school going from near the bottom of the class to doing very nicely in the top set. In fact she is regularly at the top of the top set.

Could me down to me, her fantastic tutor, maturity or omega 3.........

I've tried - the most successful supermarket in Britain (won't name, advertising and all that but has an annoying strapline of every little helps) now and again has it on very special offer so I scoop it up. And then the children complain and claim they hate it, and I forget and it goes back in the cupboard and by the time I remember again we have to start on 6 capsules a day to build up the long chain whatevers and, yup, the complaining kicks off. and on and on.
Funnily enough, I got going on it again yesterday - given up on big son since is already at GS (bad slack mother) and force-feeding it to less than compliant younger son. Bad grace all round. But if he can make something difficult, he will. Bless.
Any one else got any sensible answers!

quel coincidence #2 - having mackerel tonight, tend to sling a load of seeds into salads always, too, and bread (make own, the virtue). Fiendish little things, who'd have thought they'd hold so much goodness.

:D I put our son on EPA for about 18 months or two years in the hope of improving his ability to concentrate, his motivation and performance improved no end. It also coincided with him being tutored, of course, which might have had something to do with it...must admit, now that he's finished 11+ he doesn't bother and I don't remind him (pushy but short attention span - it's obviously me that needs the stuff really...).

Personally I think it's good for parental peace of mind, but perhaps no more than that - maturity, a healthy diet and plenty of mental stimulation are probably more effective. It won't do any harm unless you make them eat it in wheelbarrow loads though so why not...

There isn't any proper research (double blind trials, peer reviewed etc); everything you hear is anecdotal, including what follows.

I tried it with elder DC years ago when he was ~7, bored at school and so difficult, lacking focus and getting into trouble so it seemed worth a try.

They both already took multivit, so I just added omega 3 without any comment. He didn't realise the (hoped for) significance and I doubt it would have crossed his mind to mention it to teachers, so the fact that within a couple of months there was such a marked difference that teachers were raising the subject of what a "different child" he was etc etc is not down to them "expecting" it.

Both DC still take it, though they are now aware of the controversy about the Durham "trials" etc, so will no doubt reject it one day on scientific grounds!

How much of the improvement is due to omega 3 and how much to maturity etc, I don't know. I just say to them that whilst it may not have been proven, it's unlikely to do harm, is probably at least moderately beneficial, so why not continue.

Thanks Tracy

Would you recommend any particular strength - I know you can't say brands

For context, would also be useful to know what school year she was in when you started, how long you had the tutor for, plus any other background info

Cheers and thanks

I've heard something about this "long chain"... Could you let us know more about what it means..

Is it something to do with it only working once you have had a build up over time..?

Many thanks
