12+ transfer appeal for SHF

Post by dejavu »

Just got back to find a letter to say that DD's appeal was succesful!!!!!!!

Cannot believe it - as 23 were appealing for SHF, which had allocated all of its places.

Briefly it said that the Panel considered all the evidence which included but was not limited to the fact that DD would like to attend SHF because of its specialism in science and performing arts. The IAP considered that she is on the G & T Register (for maths) and that she could travel in with her brother who is at Aylesbury Grammar School. And on balance, the IAP concluded that the prejudice to her and her family by non-admission outweighed the prejudice to the school by admission.

It has been such a long, long journey - which started off with her brother's 11+ appeal - which we won (and who is an A-A* student). So many ups and downs, Ombudsman investigations, etc.

Thank you so, so much for advice and support - I NEVER thought I would be posting this! Special thanks go to Etienne, Sally-Anne, Guest 55, Ambridge and Mummog.

We had the Stage 2 appeal for her first preference school, AHS, yesterday, so had not heard that the SHF appeal was successful. It went ok, but unfortunately one panel member was on both appeal panels.
many thanks

Hi Etienne!

I think you know how I "pulled that one out of the bag" - because of YOU!

I took your advice and kept things simple and made it easier for the panel - used headings, which help to keep you focused, but backed everything up with evidence eg. "Specialist Science Status" - DD excels at it and wants to be a vet (included an extract from local paper when she was interviewed about dog show handling, where it said "She has ambitions to be a vet",) and a letter from former Science Club at school saying how enthusiatic she was; "Peer Support", "Logistics and Travel" etc.

In fact, our appeal only lasted 15 minutes - 4 questions. And the chair made a point of saying that I had submitted such a clear case as to why she should go to SHF - "As you can see, I have highllighted a lot of what you have said "- and waved my letter in front of me, and she said that she didn't have any questions!

For the AHS - our preference school, there were a different set of criteria/arguments of why it is the best school for her. Again, the appeal only lasted 15 minutes, but it was a bit sterner. Still only 5 or 6 questions. But the panel member that was on both panels didn't meet my eye when we left, which makes me think that he had already given her a place at SHF, so I won't give her one for this. Oh well, at least DD is going to a gs, and a good one at that!!!!!!
many thanks

Dearest dejavu

It's been a long hard road for you, and I'm just so delighted that you've triumphed in the end.

Whatever the outcome of your other appeal, your daughter should be really proud of how you've represented her.

Congratulations to you both! :D
