what levels are expected in year 7 and beyond

Post by vetgal »

Hello everyone

Well I was wondering if you take SATs in year 7 and above to see what level you are working at ie. 7a,5b,6c...

If so what levels would you expect for a year 7 at the end of year 7.

And what would you expect in the years up to Year 9.

I understand in KS3 levels go up to Level 8 am I correct?

This post may sound kind of strange but I think you should be able to know what levels to be aiming for.

P.S- my KS2 SAT's results are 5,5 and 5

In Maths you should go up a level each year - if your level 5 was a good level 5 - so by Year 9 you should be level 8.

In Science and English then level 7s are more likely ...

Well, my DCs SATs levels were all 5s. I know that (as per Guest55) sub-levels don't exist, but I asked for the scores and DC only dropped 2 marks in Literacy and Science, and 1 mark in Maths, so I'm assuming that would equate to 5a in each subject if there were sub-levels. Also, my DC took an optional year 7 maths SAT and was given a 6a. I would hope, therefore, that by the end of year 9, DC will be obtaining level 8s all round :D

Maximum possible in KS3 is level 7 in English and Science, 8 in Maths.

Is that still true? I noticed on the summary of KS3 teacher assessment results attached to my Y9 son's end of year report that 3% of boys were assessed as at level 8 in English this year (my son wasn't one of them!).

My Y7 son's target for English at the end of KS3 is an 8. I presume now the SATS aren't marked externally schools are free to assess students at an 8 if they think fit? Although nobody got an 8 in science and I would have thought someone was more likely to achieve this at a boys GS than in English!
