RE : NFER Maths Paper A Q 50

Would anyone be able to suggest a QUICK WAY to work out Q50 in PAPERA, about milkman and tha bakerman !

How about two drawing two sets of parallel lines with a 30 cm ruler with lines every cm making 28 boxes and allocate one set to the milkman and the other to the baker . Put a cross in each box/day that each of them visits .

Find the lowest common multiple. This gives the period between meetings.

The parallel lines method is fine, but under exam conditions it may take too long !!

Therefore I was wondering if anybody has another QUICK method.
The other method I tried out was
dividing 28/2 = 14 (Milkman)
dividing 28/3 = 9 (bakerman)
then 14-9= 5. As they have met in twice in the first week
threrefore 5-2 =3 (Answer they have given !)
Is this the best method ?

Why is it not this ?
There 4 lots of 7 in 28
If in the first 7 days they meet twice so therefore they would meet for a total of 8 times : 4 * 2
So 8 - 2 = 6 ?
Taking away 2 as they have already meet twice
I now Im confused so just need further explanation

Well done WP, I recalled your diagram but searched and could not find it.

I think at this age 10/11 years diagrams are the key, I also think kids should spot a time consuming question, guess, move on and come back at the end of the test to try and work it out.

For many kids time is the most valuable commodity on test day and they need to know how to use it wisely. Get as many marks as possible in the time allowed, do not become fixated with getting every answer right, 99% is fine.
