Slough Grammar & CAF form

Post by mumof4 »

Hi All

have been a fan of this site for a number of years as it has been a great source of advice and aid in helping me get my older two children to Grammar school.
I am now renewing my association as my third child has now started year 5 and a few things has changed since my older 2 sat the 11 plus.

My query is regarding Slough Grammar and the fact that this year they are issuing the results of their 11 plus before you need to submit the CAF form.
If your child misses a pass by 1 or 2 marks wouldn't the temptation be to exclude Slough Grammar on your CAF form.
However if you do not have Slough Grammar on your CAF form wouldn't this then mean you will not be able to appeal as you can only appeal for a school you have applied to, ie via the CAF form. Sitting the 11 plus is not an application to the school in itself.

Would love to know what people's thoughts are on this issue.
Also what do people think is the real motive for Slough Grammar moving the date of their 11 plus forward.

Thanks

Hi mumof4,

Welcome to the forum. I think bringing the exams forward and giving you a result which indicates your chance of success is a step forward.

I can see your point that if you are close you still have a dilemma, but if you like the school put it on your form, there will be some movement before March allocations.

Here in backwards old Reading we get the result in March, it is a long painful wait, I wish we got the exam result early.

Couldn't agree with Steve more. Much better to have the result informing your CAF preferences.

I would like to think that Slough Grammars motive to bring the 11+ and results forward is to allow parents to make an informed decision before having to fill out the CAF form.

Thank-you all for your comments, I agree knowing the results before filling in the CAF would be helpful and my question regarding Slough Grammar motive was more as an aside. What I was really interested in was discovering if people would be brave enough to put Slough Grammar on their CAF form even if their child had just missed the pass mark of 111, and if people were aware that if thet did not they would not be able to appeal.

How does the allocation works in SGS

Post by worried »

Hi.,

How does allocation works? Does 111 is passmark and allocation depends on the distance from school to home? or Allocation depends on the highest ranked candidates irrespetive of distance distance from home to school?

Allocation for SGS
If your child has reached the pass mark (usually 111) he/she will be eligible for a place at Grammar school. There is no guarantee of a place as places will be allocated according to children’s test scores and there may be more children passing the test than there are places available.
If there are more than one applicant on the same score then it is judged by distance.

The same applies to Langley Grammar

Herschel is slightly different this year.
Where the number of pupils who have achieved the required standard in the tests by gaining an overall score of 111 or more exceeds the number of places available, places will be allocated according to the following oversubscription criteria in this order of priority:

(i) Looked After Children who have reached the required standard;

(ii) pupils with special educational needs (where written evidence is supplied from a recognised authority specialising in the particular needs of the pupil) who have or in the view of Governors should have reached the required standard;

(iii) the next 70 pupils in rank order of performance in the tests;

(iv) proximity to the school. Distance will be measured in a straight line from the front door of the child's home address (including flats) to the main entrance gate of the school, using Slough's Geographical Information System (GIS), with those closer to the school receiving the higher priority.

4. In the event of one or more eligible pupils being tied for a final place or places within criteria (i), (ii) or (iii), priority will be decided according to proximity to the school. Distance will be measured in a straight line from the front door of the child's home address (including flats) to the main entrance gate of the school, using Slough's Geographical Information System (GIS), with those closer to the school receiving the higher priority.
All schools have to have 'looked after children' and 'SEN' as i) & ii) as the first criteria.

clarification

Post by worried »

Hi Chad,

thanks for info. My question is : does slough grammar school adopt same appoach similar to Bucks? i.e., 111 is pass mark and seats are allocated based on distance from school to home.

What would be allocation process
1. If a child gets 118, will he be selected irrespective of distance from school.
2. If a child gets 111, does the distance is considered for selection?

The first criteria is 'mark scored' irrespective of distance..... then if there is a tie on the mark scored then distance is used as the tiebreaker.

Therefore 118 will always be offered before 111 irrespective of distance.

If you look at the 'stickies' on the berks forum you can see down to what 'score' the slough grammars offered over the years....... (this is on information freely given on the forum by previous applicants... so is only a general idea..... but does not include appeals) :D

standardization

Post by worried »

Hi.,

For standardization, which averages,standard deviation are used by Slugh Grammar school to arrive the score.
Are they using the averages, standard deviation collected from this test or from the national averages, sd collected by NFER?
