Can someone help to work out this please.

Paul walked 6km then got a lift in a car for 16km which was two thirds of the remaining distance.
How far does he have to travel to complete his trip.

(a) 21km
(b) 22km
(c) 23km
(d) 24km

Let x be the remaining distance. We want to work out what x is.

We are told that two thirds of the remaining distance is 16 km.

So two thirds of x = 16 km

so 2/3 * x = 16 km
so 2 * x = 16 km *3 (multiply both sides by 3)
so 2* x = 48 km
so x = 48 km / 2 (divide both sides by 2)
so x = 24 km

Two thirds of remaining distance is 16km

Therefore one third is 8km.

Therefore remaining distance is 24km.

Badly worded question though. Without the answers, I would have said the remaining distance to complete the journey could have been the 8km.

I agree with dadofkent in saying that this is a badly worded question, as are a few at times.
As above, answer is 24km. The question basically means to ask how far does he travel in total, (it makes it sound like how much more to complete his trip, which would have been 8km) !!

16km is 2/3rd remaining distance.. so remaining distance is 16*3/2=24km

Classic example of the sort of question that a bright child could easily over-think.

It’s so badly worded that there are at least three different ways the question could be read.

I get the children who struggle with these to draw a rectangle, which represents the whole. In this case the rectangle would be cut into three pieces. We know that two out of three total 16. So each piece has 8 inside. 16 + 8 = 24.
