Selection Review - help!
Hi
I'm new to this forum and I am already finding it incredibly useful!
The situation is that our son missed the cut off mark for Ermysteds in Skipton by 3 marks (he would have passed the previous 2 years!). However, we are seriously thinking of going to the selection review as only 95 boys achieved the pass mark of 227 and above and there are 112 places available.
Has anybody had the experience of going to a selection review when there are still places available as such?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Yorkie and welcome to the forum.
No experience of Skipton myself, but I understand the girls' school is seriously undersubscribed with passes this year too.
I would think given this year's circumstances especially, and the fact that your ds is only 3 marks short, that you would have a realistic 'chance' of winning an appeal if presented properly.
Do read the guidelines at the top of this forum specifically for non qualification. Gather in all the evidence you can from Head teachers etc. Is there a specialist subject Ermysted's teaches your son excels at? That would be a big aid to your appeal.
Good luck with it all, you'll get lots of support and guidance from this site.

Hi
Bougalou is the local "expert" on selection appeals - try sending her a PM, she will probably be able to give you info about the process.
Re the undersubscription this year - both schools are low girls 88/112 and boys 95/112.
careful on mentioning the fact that they would have got in in previous years - I have heard others who are appealinmg discussing this and the fact is that the papers are not necessarily comparable score wise year on year - it is simply the pass mark reached by 27% of the in catchment kids.
I know of a child who may well have got a higher mark than her sister who went 2 years ago but she herself is one mark below the cutoff.
Also don't mention RIPON!!! Parents comment that their child would have been deemed selective in Ripon where the cutoff score is lower on the same paper year after year. I think the comment from the LEA si something like "move to Ripon then!".
I know of a fair few lads and lasses who have got in on appeal over the years and they have done fine.
BTW are you in catchment?
Good luck
Herman

Thanks for such speedy replies!
I have heard there was a 'bit of do' regarding Ripon last year so I will remember to keep quiet!
No we are out of the catchement area but the LEA said this wouldn't be taken into consideration anyway now? They said it was all going to be down to academic ability.......

yes the selection appeal will purely be about the academic issues. If you get through that then it is just down to the allocations in March.
As it stands there are currently enough places for all those who reach the standard, also the line out of catchment goes out quite a long way - usually at least Keighley, Ilkley, Colne. I think they cut off near Burley in wharfedale 2 years ago and half way into Ilkley last year.
Ripon is an ongoing saga.............. I've never yet heard a sensible explanation of why 2 similar rural areas produce such different cutoffs for the top 27%. There is a fair amount of tutoring I think in both areas, small number of private schools in both .... who knows

I know - and the LEA will have their fingers in their ears!!!!
Can't get my head round it .. the most recent info from the LEA below just says ... the scores are "different" in Skipton and Ripon. hum!!

Yorkie -have a look at page 16 (if you haven't seen it before) - gives some of the figures re appeals etc.
It is perplexing why there is a difference in the qualifying score (and I think the qualifying distance is measured differently too?).
Could it have anything to do with Ermysteds being a voluntary aided school, whereas Ripon isn't? Looking at SGHS site it appears to be the same as Ripon. So I wonder if they set the criteria for Ermysteds and the girls have to follow suit to make them on an equal footing ................... or perhaps I'm just waffling
