Maths questions

Post by MelW »

Hi

My son is due to sit the Bucks 11+ this year but his maths is weak. Does anyone one know roughly how many questions out of the 80 are maths-based?

Thanks

Very few are what I would call 'maths' - look on the DEMO CD on this site as it has examples of all the 21 types used.

If he is much below level 4 it will be difficult for a Grammar school to support him - at least 80% will have level 5 in Maths

Thanks for that. He is at an independent school so I have no idea what level he may be up to! They say his maths is weak so that is all I have to go on.

Or get the IPS VR Method and technique Guide.

They are what I would call Logical Maths.

Expect quite a few over the 2 Papers.... You have a long way to go yet.

Your child will be fine..

Good Luck

It is more about basic arithmetic - fluency in tables up to 12 is needed to look for patterns.

There are no fractions or percentages or algebra or what I would call 'real Maths'

For sequences the stuent needs to know the following

Standard numerical sequences

Alternating sequences were there are 2 sequences

2 3 4 6 6 9 ?

Square number sequences

1 4 9 16 25 ?

Multiplication sequences

2 4 8 16 32 ?

Multiplication sequences x1 x2 x3

2 2 4 12 48 ?

Fibonacci sequences were the sum of the previous two numbers gives the next number

Hi

The Demo CD you need to look at is for verbal reasoning CD1 not the Maths CD.

Dear Mel W

A copy and paste of my thoughts on the 'MATHS'

In addition, there are 4 types of maths questions, they are not rocket science, BUT require an ability to quickly recall the 4 maths operations i.e. adding, subtraction, multiplying and dividing. The quicker the child can recall, the more time can be spent on codes [easy marks, but time consuming] Basically if you ask for 8 x 7 you want the answer 56, now not in 10 seconds time, once they know their times tables inside out and back to front [ up to 12 x] then division becomes easy. Adding and subtraction should be practised using numbers under 150….try making up games, giving quick fire questions in the car, out for walks etc.
