Re-marking and analysis

We knew that our DS had problems with paper two due to disruption and layout and time information, but were very disappointed and shocked by first paper result. He had felt the first paper went well....but the actual result came out too close to paper two which he did not even finish.

He is left handed and I need to know if there are ever issues with lines not being clear in boxes on the answer paper. His comment when he saw the mark was "that wasn't my work".

To put our mind at rest we would like a manual re-mark of paper 1 and ideally an analysis of paper 2 - if he got every question right that he answered but didn't finish due to our extenuating circumstances can this be analysed?

Welcoming any evidence and experience you have in this area - anecdotal or otherwise. Anyone who can explain what you get from a manual re-mark and what the actual analysis is....would be really kind and helpful.

Sorry to take a little while to get back to you. Etienne and I have been talking about this.

You can certainly ask for a manual re-mark of both papers. What is less certain is whether you can ask for an analysis of the paper, with questions such as:

1. How many questions were not answered at all?

2. How many questions remained unanswered specifically at the end of the paper, i.e. in a sequence at the end.

I think the answer is "don't ask, don't get". You will need to call Admissions to discuss this with them and say that you are requesting the information under the Data Protection Act because you believe it to be central to your son's appeal case. There will be a fee of some sort payable, but it is not prohibitive.

Hi, don't know if this helps but I spoke to Kent LEA admissions, they very kindly pulled dd's papers and manually checked. They were able to tell me how many she got right and that she had answered all questions. There was no charge made and it was actioned within a couple of days.

This is for Bucks:

Where a child has taken part in the 11+ testing process parents are able, upon receipt of
the appropriate fee, to request the following (under the terms of the Data Protection Act
1998 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000):
1. Raw scores - £10
2. Test paper remark - £25 (£15 as the paper will be marked by hand plus £10 as the
raw scores will also be released)
3. Test paper analysis - £25 (as above)
All such requests must be made within 21 days of the parents receiving notification of their
child’s performance in the tests (Section 12 of the D P Act). Where a request is received
after this date, the LA can refuse to provide the information.
The additional £15 fee (in 2 and 3 above) is payable as under Schedule 7(9) of the Freedom
of Information Act 2000, the LA is not required to provide exam scripts or the information
recorded in them, hence the LA is required to undertake extra work in order to provide the
requested information.
In all instances, we would suggest that the parent discusses their intention to request such
information with you [the headteacher] and that where possible the request is made via the school. All requests must be made in writing and be accompanied by the appropriate fee, cheques
should be made payable to Buckinghamshire County Council.
