coordinate or co-ordinate (v)

Not an 11+ question but one that might be of interest.

I am currently writing a number of public sector contracts and have been criticised for using coordinate without a hyphen. The reviewers and editors insist that I write use co-ordinate. I thought that this wasn't incorrect just a matter of style.

Any english scholars out there that can shed light on this.

Coordinate in the context of the document is the verb form meaning - To work together harmoniously.

Oxford dictionary has it as coordinate (also co-ordinate)

Mr yoyo says he would hyphenate, but without hyphen is also considered correct nowadays

Hi Ken, I’m a book and magazine editor and we no longer hyphenate coordinate – used to when I was starting out 20+ years ago, but not these days.

That said, it’s not wrong to hyphenate it, so if that’s what the client wants…
