Laser Eye Treatment - Have you? Would you?

Hi

Has anyone had this done? Are you pleased with the results? Did you recover as quickly as they say and was it as painless as they say?

Also, there are 2 treatments available now - the latest being Wavefront which apparently corrects the imperfections in your eyes up to 25 better than with contacts/glasses. Is this possible / worth it?

Sorry for all the questions but it's a big decision for me, as it's quite a lot of money and well, my eyes! But I'm so fed up of wearing glasses and I can't where contacts for work or driving at night I thought I would investigate.....

Any advice / comments are welcome.

Haven't had it done and wouldn't get it done.

Know someone who has had it done and 10 years later they're back in glasses

I wouldn't have it done unless it were medically necessary. As much as I dislike wearing glasses and contacts,the risks outweigh the benefits and chances are I would still have to wear glasses for reading anyway.
Sorry to be so negative but I have wrestled with this dilemma myself and am too much of a coward to have it done!

I have wanted OH to have it done because without glasses he is effectively blind and could not even walk down the street! However, if something went wrong and he was made blind by the procedure then he would not be able to work and we couldn't maintain the same lifestyle. My point is, if the worse were to happen could you manage financially?

I understand they only do one eye at a time - this is to make sure that if it does go wrong (highly unlikely that it will!!) then you will still have sight in the remaining eye.

I do know one chap who had it done. He got it cheap as he works for a newspaper and promised to do an article about it in return for a big discount.

He is now glasses free and very happy, but no it was not painless....in fact I got the impression it was about as not painless as you can get

Our eye specialist advised me that he would not let his family have it done - good enough for me

I have two friends who are eye surgeons - gosh I feel thick in their company. Anyway one is dead against it and the other would only recommend certain surgeons who charge Â£2000 per eye and keep the patient in overnight. But I also know a few people who have never looked back and their eyesight is good.

I think there are concerns because the long term impact isn't known - so it might be fine now but what about in 20/30/40 years.
Guess it depends how old you are when you have it done

I also loathe my glasses and contacts such a bother. Looked into it myself but have bad astigmatism so not possible. OH easy going but scientifically minded doctor and dead against it - for reasons as above. Also some people seem to get haloes afterwards so can't drive in the dark - def rules it out from my point of view.
