Aldenham Preparatory & Other Non Selective

I have my daughter who is 5+ and seems to be struggling in a state school with her reading, spellings and maths behind her peers. I am now looking for a school in Hertfordshire preferrably offering financial help and commutable from St Albans . I have read good reviws about Aldenham and St Johns Preparatory in Potters Bar and would like more info on them?

Have you considered the Harpenden schools? St Nicholas is good, and not far from the station.

Abbot's Hill on the outskirts of Hemel is a very warm nuturing school with girls of all abilities. Their next open day is March 6th.

My son goes to Aldenham Senior school, having started in Y7. I really wish we had known how brilliant some prep schools are and how much more he could have learned at primary school.
Aldenham prep is a brand new building and got a very good Ofsted report recently I believe. The whole Aldenham community is very caring and nurturing environment, I would definitely arrange a visit.

Have you considered Stormont School in Potters Bar? We had never heard of it until my dd started doing entrance exams back in November. Then we kept seeing this same uniform again and again in all her exams and then again in the interviews. Curious I went to look at the website and was impressed to read about Y5 and Y6 being taught by specialist teachers instead of a form teacher. It also says that every girl in 2009 got into her first place school which is very impressive seeing as we saw loads of them at DAO, Habs and City which are all entrance exam schools that turn down lots of children.

Stormont is only up to the age of 13 though, if you get your child into the prep dept of a school that goes all the way up to 18 then they should be able to stay there throughout their school career which I would imagine is much less stressful !

There's also Manor Lodge school which is near junction 22 of the M25 between London Colney and Potters Bar. My friends are very pleased with the school for their child.

stormont is a fantastic school - have several friends with daughters there.

St John's prep - no! Many horror stories. If you want to pm me I will link to several accounts of it (which all say the same type of thing about the school as my friends that have pulled their children out of there )

I second 'fairydust' dont go anywhere near St John prep! Way too many horror stories.
