My DS has just had his 50 word story published in the Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire publication.
While I do agree that it is a money making exercise for the publishers,it's still good to see their work in a proper published book!
Are you both buying the book? We know two others at her school have had a Mini Saga accepted. Do they eventually end up on Amazon so are then much cheaper!!

Over the years a few people have mentioned this sort of thing in Appeal cases: "Oh, he's had a poem/story published - I do think I should mention it at the appeal."
Errrrm, ... no ...
I have reached the point where I think that it is almost exploiting both children and adults. On the other hand, it would be a brave parent who said "no".
