Reading Grammars

Post by Bewildered »

Whilst browsing :) came across this on the Reading LA web site, under the Schools Admissions Forum section, minutes of last meeting:
In relation to Grammar Schools, the draft Code stated that preference could not be given to siblings in the over-subscription criteria. Grammar and other schools, which were using selection by ability or aptitude, should ensure parents were informed of the outcome of entry tests before making their applications to other schools. However, pupils must not be given an offer of a place other than by the local authority administering the coordinated admission scheme. It was therefore evident that the test result letter would need to be carefully worded to avoid formally offering a place but at the same time providing parents with sufficient information to make an informed choice.
So they are aware of New Admissions code guidance for grammars, but doesn't look like they are about to bring in this recommended good practice.

The following was the reply from Reading LEA regarding their implementation of the rules from the latest Admission Code.

Hope this helps and confirms that there's going to be no change................its a shame.......

The grammar schools are foundation schools and therefore set their own
admission policy. They have consulted Reading Borough Council and are
currently consulting on their policy for admission in 2008. The
policies can
be seen on our website
http://www.reading.gov.uk/General.asp?i ... 2-A78224F8 After taking
the
new Admissions Code into consideration, bearing in mind that this
clause is
not mandatory, both Kendrick and Reading Schools, supported by Reading
Borough Council's Admission Forum have decided not to bring the testing
procedure forward. The reasoning behind this decision is, that now that
no
admission authority can have a first preference first policy no child
will
be disadvantaged by putting a grammar school as a first preference. To
bring
the test forward would have involved the schools in setting up late
testing
for those that missed the test but submitted an on time or late
application
for good reasons. Therefore it would not be possible to give all
parents
information before the 24 October.

Parents whose children take the tests for Reading and Kendrick will he
informed of the outcome of their application at the same time as for
other
schools. Letters will be sent on the 3 March 2008 as the 1 March is a
Saturday.

Would I be right in thinking the schools recieve the admissions lists today so know the results ???
Will have to avoid meeting the gaze of teachers on collection in case interpretation is incorrect

Results Too Close,

Original time table stated schools informed of final allocation 24th February in Reading Borough . I suspect the schools have information.

Have a brief appointment with class teacher at 4 pm ( missed yesterdays parents evening ).

Will try to ask the BIG question, "Can we expect to receive good news?"

Purely in the interests of managing my sons expectation.

Concentrating on the positives, the kids all worked hard, did their best and have learnt a lot and grown up in the process. We are continuing the momentum with KS2 revision and I must confess I have looked at ordering some CGP KS3 books. :(

Good luck and best wishes to everybody.
