music scholarship

Post by supertrex »

Hi all,

I missed the right time to submit application for the music scholarship, would most schools consider late application?

Any other music scholarships between year 13+ and year 16+? for most schools?

Your advice is appreciated.

Hi,

Are you saying that you have a place at a school but not a scholarship, or that you have not applied at all? Is this for 11+ or 13+.

I would have thought that the chances of being allowed to try for a music scholarship at 11+ would be very slim now as they would already have been offered. I don't know anything about 13+ procedures.

If you have a place but wish you had applied for the music sholarship there is no harm in asking if there is any possibility of being considered if any scholarships have not been allocated or are not taken up.

It probably dependes on how competitive the schools you want are. We are based in North London and I think we would get short shrift if we tried to apply for a scholarship now, but I could be wrong and it could be different elsewhere.

I think what Kev is saying is likely to be true - the music scholarships are likely to have been awarded and many have waiting lists in case the child doesn't not take up the place at the school. However it is always worth asking .. particularly if you have a child with exceptional talent who I am sure they would be very keen to have.

music scholarship

to kev and hermanmunster,

I have no place in any school so far. Have applied Wells Cathedral and Taunton School somerset and sent my son's piano playing to them.

Both schools did not commit anything but asked me to pay a visit to the schools and meet the head etc.

Since this is case by case and I agree with you that no harm to ask individual schools, though the chances are getting very little. Thanks.

Do know of one Indie (mostly year 7 entry) where they offer additional scholarships into year 9 & year 12 for new and existing students.
Would think it very unlikely that there are any unallocated scholarships now for entry next year but if a child was very very talented (much more so than any other applicants they had originally) I guess there are a few schools that could 'create' an additional scholarship?

A specialist music school like Wells may have different procedures to an ordinary independent, so you may be lucky. I know Purcell have a long period of auditions and some decisions can be made quite late. If you qualify for help at Wells under the Music and Dance Scheme that would be different to an ordinary scholarship. Of couse he would need to be a very talented and committed musician.

Out of interest what are his instruments and what level does he play at?

Good luck!

My son is age 14. He first instrument is piano and he got Grade 8 ABRSM exam. He is asked to visit the school and played in the Music School. I guess this is regarded as a visit and they have no commitment so far.

I think it's worth to pay a visit. Without an audition, the school is difficult to offer anything to us. BTW I have sent them an video as pre-audition.

What year is he in? If he is in Yr 8 then it may not be too late to apply to places like Eton, Harrow, Stowe, Tonbridge etc, especially if he is Grade 8 piano. What is his second instrument and what grade is he?

Meant to add that I would seriously consider Dean Close. I have been stunned at the standard of music there and so far it is the best of any senior school I have seen thus far, except for specialist schools of course. Many pupils win organ and choral scholarships to Oxbridge and a number are members of the RCM conservatoire whilst still at school.

We try year 9, 2010 entry. His second instrument is recorder (no grade taken). His academic performance is just so so, I don't think those tops school would consider him.

p.s. boarding fee for Stowe is very expensive.
