2010 Exam Formats

Post by GrammarGrad »

Hi All

Just signed up but been a lurker for some time. I searched through the forums and have found information disseminated so would like some assistance in having a comprehensive post on the matter of the 2010 11+ Exam formats. I think this would really help parents and tutors alike.

So far, my understanding is that:

KE Camp Hill (Boys & Girls)
KE Five Ways
KE Aston
KE Handsworth (Girls)
Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School
Queens Mary’s Grammar School

will all adopt the University of Durham CEM style of 11+ exam in 2010.

If so, what format is this? Maths, English, VR and NVR?

Handsworth Grammar School (Boys) will have it's own test? What does that mean? It writes it own test or does an 11+ one? If so what type? NFER? This site says:

The tests comprise the following and are all in the standard style: –

Verbal Reasoning – 1 hour
English – 30 minutes
Maths standard – 30 minutes

Verbal Reasoning is the key test and the results of English and Maths will only be taken into account if your child does not meet the requisite mark for the Verbal Reasoning.

Is this still true?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. What is DS and DD? :?

DS= Dear/Dreadful/Delightful etc Son
DD = " Daughter
seems naff at first but makes it easier than referring to them by name by mistake.

I'm a newbie, my daughter taking 2010 exams.

Can someone please tell about what the specialist status is all about? Does it matter in the choice of schools?

Specialist Status is just a measn of a school getting more money from DCSF for achieving excellence. KEFW for example has both Humanities and Science specialisms.

Thanks KenR. One more question :

But other than getting revenue for school does it matter as a parent? As when I had been to open days last year, most schools try to emphasise on their specialist status.

Do the kids get more attention in the subjects for which the school has attained Specialist status?

Have posted a new sticky in the B/ham Section which collates and summarises the B/Ham KE Exam content posted by parents over the years.

Hope this helps

Thanks KenR thats a great help on the content.

I'm still trying to get my head around the format. You have for each year:

Paper 1, break and then Paper 2.

So is that on one day, 2 papers with a break in between or on the two separate weekends; Paper 1 on one and Paper 2 on the next?

Also it seems that in 2009, there was VR and Maths on Paper 1 and English and NVR on Paper 2? Would that be a correct assumption or do the two halves of any Paper vary indiscriminately between the four disciplines?

Thanka again.

Both the same day:

Paper 1 (45 mins)
Break (15 mins if I remember correctly)
Paper 2 (45 mins)

In the last couple of years the format seems to have been:

Paper 1:
Vocab (synonyms and antonyms)
Long maths and data processing/data interpretation
2-dimensional NVR

Paper 2:
Comprehension x 2
Cloze (missing words)
Quick maths
3-dimensional NVR

But the format can change from year to year and sections move between papers from time to time.

Would anyone know what kind of practice papers are best for the KEH NVR? I see there is some mention of 3 dimensional NVR. I have not seen anything much like that in the NVR stuff I have been going through with my daughter, other than questions along the lines of "which one of these 4 different 2 dimensional shapes can be folded up to make this 3 dimensional shape" - is that the kind of thing that has appeared in past KEH NVR sections?

Any help with suggested practice materials would be appreciated.

Thanks
