Oh dearie me...: (

Post by Chelmsford mum »

Having a bit of a panic. :?
DD2 -middle one in year 7 got an email tonight along the lines of everyone from your old school hates you, you are stuck up blah blah.DD was the only one who got into grammar.Actually she has several primary friends she socialises with often but not the sender of the e mail.(obviously)
This girl said that another girl had said she was posh etc (I wish  )
Anyway I know I should be more grown up but DD was upset, not first horrible email from this girl, and so I replied
Polite but firm...
"This is Mrs ********, *****'s mum.If you continue to send these emails I will contact your school with a complaint of cyber bulling.I have printed off all the emails and the replies .You are welcome to as well etc.
Please do not do this again. I wish you well in your new school etc."

Within 10 seconds grovelling reply of apology which I thanked them for and said no ill will and wished them well.
My worry is that I went too far in corresponding with a child.
Should I have left it......... :?

Sounds perfectly reasonable course of action to me. And effective.
Had the child SAID those things within earshot than presumably you would have pulled them up on it.
You have nipped it in the bud. Had you not done so then your DC may have been on the receiving end of numerous similar messages and the damage that much worse.
Good mum.

Thank you both.OH not in and would say "whatever you think" if he was...
Not feeling very mature and grown up. Can't help thinking that contact with the parent would have been better but genuinely do not have contact details for these particular parents. Oh well - I didn't actually say anything nasty.Just threatened to take it to their school...

I think you did absolutely the right thing. It needs to be squashed right away.

Highly likely that the the kid was feeling brave - it is v easy to send e-mails like this - and will be seriously shocked at your reply... and so they should. Perhaps we should all give our kids a standard reply like that to send out!

Chelmsford Mum, what you did worked; ideally it would have been good to have spoken to the responsible adult but a) you had no contact details b) you succeeded in stopping your daughter from being bullied. Pat yourself on the back for nipping this in the bud and have (another?!) stiff drink. :)

Well done you!! I still regret not taking on the bully who made my son's life a misery for the whole of year 4, but he always looked too small.

If it happened again I am not sure I would be as restrained as you were - very grown up.

Thanks everyone,
My fear is that I may have made it worse.Sad to say that I worry when she is late and appears locally in her recognisable uniform. We don't live in the Bronx - it is gnerally nice here but there is a certain amount of resentment in certain circles of the local grammar school. Not everywhere - we have some lovely people locally.
I suppose it is done now and cannot be reversed.I just need to watch out for fall out.I don't suppose there was a perfect response to this but at least there will be no e mail insults for a while... :(
