SHSG -GCSE Exams in Year 9

Post by forum1 »

hi,

My DS goes to SHSG and will be in year 9. She has been told that she may sit some GCSE exams in some subjects. Does anyone know the process of exams in year 9.... How and what exams would be done in year 9.

thanks Forum1

Perhaps someone might reply if you told us what SHSG stands for - or is it me being stupid, is it up there with Eton and we all should know? I do know one with those initials and nothing would surprise me! I have never heard of doing GCSEs in Year 9 unless they are in languages where a child is already fluent, or IT if they are particularly geeky. I guess the answer is: contact the school or add this post to the appropriate regional forum so someone who is at the school can answer. :)

DCs school has just started doing the most basic science GCSE in year 9 to fulfill govt requirements so they can then do the ICSE in years 10/11.
Could be something along these lines?

Im in a different area to you but my dd took core science gcse in year9 and half a RE gcse. I think the idea is to get core science out of the way as now in year 10 she is taking additional science at gcse. This could be the same at your dc's school :)

Is it Southend High School for Girls? I googled the initials and that's what came up first. :D It has a language specialism so perhaps they push these :?

We start modular GCSEs at our school in year 9. Many of our year 9 pupils have already taken science modules. The curriculum for the first module of maths is also studied in year 9, although the exam is taken in year 10.

DS's grammar take a language in year 9, although I am not seeing any benefit of this so far.

If you are discussing Southend High School for Girls then a member of the Essex forum may be able to give you more details.

My daughter is in a Kent Grammar and is in Year 9. She has taken quite a few GCSE module tests in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geography already with some more in the very near pipeline. Most of the earlier tests were the easier optional answer tests moving on to the essay writing ones. Pupils are allowed to resit if they want to better their grades. I am not sure how this impacts when it comes to University selection and GCSE resits but I have heard that as long as you resit them in Year 9, you should be okay.
