Is it possible to apply twice for the same academic year?

Post by Marylou »

DD is thinking of making a deferred university application for a highly competitive course. So if she applies this October for entry in 2012 and fails to secure any offers based on predicted grades, can she then have another go in next year's round, again for 2012, on the basis of her actual results? Or does a rejection mean that you can't reapply for the same course for the same academic year?

The alternative would be to apply for 2011 and then have another go the following year if necessary, but the point is she really would prefer to defer for a year...but not two years!

All wisdom, suggestions etc. welcome as always. :)

Hi ML - this isn't exactley what you were after but sounds like a start:: (from UCAS
Can I reapply if I already have a deferred place?

No. If you don't want to attend the course you have accepted, you will need to discuss your options with your university or college. If they agree to withdraw your place and you had applied for the course in the previous application cycle, you can complete a new application.
Sounds lilke if you have no place then you can apply again ... presumably to the same place / course as first time round?

Thanks, Herman - that would suggest that they treat all applications as new ones. It makes sense to have two bites of the cherry if possible, but I think the first one is going to be a more of a practice run - and a bonus if it succeeds first time round!

If you can do it, and it looks like you can then it would definitely be good to have two bites at the cherry...

People obviously apply in consecutive years if i doesn't work first time, can't see that they can stop you if one of the applications happens to be for deferred entry

Dont see this would be that unusual as by the second application she will have a level results & if going for interview will be more mature/have greater experience.
Also deferred entry often harder as the Uni don't know what the situation will be by then.

Probably best to call the dept & ask directly. If you telephone they will be unlikely to keep a record of your 'general enquiry' at this stage.

a friend of ours has been allowed to defer her place at a leading Scottish university until next year. The other university she asked to defer has said they can't, though they would have liked to - as they are anticipating a major reduction in numbers for the course. Given the piece in the Observer today - basically anticipating a pretty crippling decline during the next five years, EVEN IF plans to resolve the funding issues in other ways are resolved, getting to uni sooner, rather than later, may be a wise move. Alternatively wondering if DD - due to start in 2012 or 13 (ideally after gap year) - would be wiser to take 3 years out!

Seems to me that whatever appears to be the projected class sizes/teaching ratios/facilities etc, may well not turn out to be the case.

Thanks for your ideas - it turns out to be an academic question anyway (if you'll pardon the expression :P ) as the course DD is interested in at her first choice of university doesn't accept deferred applications. And, as AM pointed out, it's a bit risky in the current climate to put it off so it looks as though she'll be taking the plunge and applying for next year after all! So if she's lucky enough to be accepted first time around then off she goes.

Not that she's bothered by this at all - she probably can't wait to get away from us.

If she gets a place & they really like her she still might get them to defer for a year - especially if they have a strong year for applicants & she has a great plan for her year out.
