4 letter words within a sentence

Post by pheasantchick »

My son struggles in finding a four letter word within a sentance.

ie. The panDA TAkes a bamboo stick (DATA)

Does anyone know where I can get a list of these for him to practise on?

(MODS - Posted in Kent section as its on the Kent paper - please move if better posted elsewhere)

I'll move it to verbal reasoning section pheasant chick.

as for a list the Tutors CD 1 is quite good for specific practice of a question type, although may be a bit expensive. Other than that maybe the IPS how to books or you could browse through the Susan Daughtrey books to find which one includes that type of question.

Have you used the answer paper to help you? The 5 answers have broken the sentence into 2 word chunks, so he just has to look at 2 words rather than the sentence then he can block off the other letters (eg with his thumbs) and look at 3 1:2,2,1,3

eg

THE Panda THEP is not a word

THE PAnda HEPA is not a word

ThE PANda EPAN is not a word

therefore answer one is not correct so look at answer 2

The paNDA Takes NDAT is not a word..
so next set

The panDA TAkes.. DATA is a word

so answer 2 is the correct one.

Go through examples slowly like this and then build up the speed

Just spend ages trying to word my answer, and yoyo beat me two it, and much more succinctly.

That's why she tutors and I don't

One of my DDs papers (might be bond or nfer - will check when I get a chance) had the 4 letter word spanning across 3 words (which she hadn't realised could happen).
Eg. Golf is his favourite sport. (answer = FISH)
I don't know how common this is or if it appears in actual tests, but worth pointing out the possibility just in case.

for multiple choice that would show on the answer sheet,
ie golf is his. rather than golf is
is his

Oh yes, hadn't thought of MC. DDs tests will be standard format so she has work it out for herself. :D

I tell her to work straight from the answer sheet and not bother looking at the questions for this section. It saves an amazing amount of time and its much easier to spot the 4 letter word.
