Preparing for Reading Grammar

Post by 11+ novice »

Hello everyone,

I am new here and need some advice, my DS has just gone into year 4. I am targetting Reading grammar and need advise as to when i should start preparation for him. There are four subjects to prepare and i really do not want to leave everything to year 5.

My just want to ask the experienced people on the forum what did they do! Maybe start with english and maths this year, do lots of reading to build up vocab because at the moment DS is good but not really good, thus he really needs to work a lot specially on grammar and punctuations. Also in maths, after looking at KS2 maths SATS paper, i have become very nervous as there are lots of topics that he has no idea about! So again needs lots of working in maths as well. After all this there is verbal and NVerbal to go thru as well. Therefore very very nervous and concerned how will be cope up with all of it.

I am thinking of home tutoring this year as much as possible and then put him into coaching classes next year so that he gets a bit more motivated when he sees more children working hard to get a place at grammer school. Can anyone tell me a good tutor to prepare for Reading Grammar and if i need to home tutor this year what is the best method! What books to start working with etc.

Any advice will be very much appreciated

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

For year 4 start nice and gentle on the techniques of VR and NVR,.

AE How to do NVR books 1 & 2

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/books/ ... 3D6%23b382

Bond NVR by age

IPS How to do VR (much later look at AE How to do VR book 2)

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/books/ ... %3D8%23b87

IPS S starter questions

Then Tutors E-Papers level 2.

Maths and English concentrate on KS2 topics.

Don't panic and don't buy all the books at once, make it fun if you can. :)

Starting early means you can have a relaxed pace and re-visit topics to iron out problems.

Good luck.

Thanks steve, this helps a lot, will slowly start verbal and non verbal so that there is not much pressure for both DS and me. Will buy books suggested by you.
I can see maths is KS2 level, will look at various SATs paper and keep preparing. My problem in maths is DS makes very silly mistakes and i know with Reading grammar you afford to do that!

Worried about english i know Reading has very tough english, other thanmultiple choice comprehension what else do they ask ? All i am doing is making him read books to improve his vocab.

thanks a ton , will keep asking questions on the forum to help me out.
